Das im 17. Jahrhundert einflussreiche polyhistorische Werk Athanasius Kirchers entstand am Collegium Romanum und speist sich aus den Jahresberichten der Jesuiten, den darin enthaltenen Zeichnungen und Texten sowie aus mündlichen Berichten einiger Chinamissionare, mit denen Kircher bekannt war. Die reich illustrierte Publikation behandelt panoramatisch naturwissenschaftliche, religiöse und kulturelle Themen und ist als Vergleich und Alternativentwurf zu Europa angelegt (vgl. Chang 2003, S. 13 f.). Der Editio princeps 1667 folgten eine holländische Übersetzung 1668, eine gekürzte englische Fassung ein Jahr darauf, eine französische Ausgabe 1670 und schließlich eine zweite lateinische Auflage im Jahre 1672 (vgl. Chang 2003, S. 16; Leibold 2002, S. 113).
