Nachdem das Gemälde 1639 in den Besitz des spanischen Agenten Alfonso Lopez gekommen war, der vor allem im Dienste Richelieus tätig war, wurde es bereits im Winter 1641 in einer Auktion in Paris, wo Lopez seit 1640 lebte, wieder zum Verkauf angeboten. Dort erwarb es wohl Anthonis van Dyck (kurz vor seinem Tod im Dezember 1641). Das Gemälde wird im Inventar seiner Kunstsammlung von 1644 erwähnt (vgl. Wethey 1969–75, II, S. 103).
