Apelles ist in dem gleichen Mantel dargestellt, den Michelangelo in Vasaris Vitenporträt trägt, vgl. Simonato 2010, S. 282.
Auch unter Sandrarts Zeichnungen im Codex iconographicus 366 der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek München ist ein Apelles-Porträt auf fol. 10r zu finden (vgl. Bildnis Apelles Cod. icon. 366, fol. 10r), das von Mazzetti di Pietralata Johann Jakob von Sandrart zugeschrieben wird; vgl. Mazzetti di Pietralata 2011, S. 236, Kat.-Nr. D 42. Jene Rötelzeichnung, die sich von dem vorliegenden Kupferstichporträt unterscheidet, diente als Vorlage für das Bildnis des Apelles in Sandrart, Academia 1683, Tafel F (s. Mazzetti di Pietralata 2011, S. 72).
