Die ältere Linie entstand 1252 und zerfiel 1396 in die Territorien Anhalt-Zerbst und Anhalt-Köthen. Nach der Vereinigung aller anhaltischen Güter 1570 wurde mit der Erbteilung Anhalt-Dessaus von 1603 die jüngere Linie mit den Gebieten Köthen, Nienburg, Wulfen und Warmsdorf gegründet, vgl.
