Seit dem 12. Jh. als Grafschaft bezeichnet und in eine rheinische und westfälische Linie geteilt, starb im 13. Jh. die Hauptlinie aus. Unter einer neuen Linie wurde es 1380 zum Herzogtum erhoben. Nach dem Jülisch-Klevischen Erbfolgestreit fiel es 1614 mit Jülich an Pfalz-Neuburg und 1685 an die Kurpfalz; vgl. Köbler 2007, S. 60.
