Während die Zuschreibung an Agostino Carracci gesichert ist, erlaubt die Darstellung keine so eindeutige Identifizierung der Figuren. Während schon Bellori in der Frauenfigur Galatea oder Venus sah, könnte es sich nach neuerer Meinung auch um eine Szene mit Thetis und Peleus handeln (vgl. Posner 1971, S. 49, Kat.-Nr. 111).
