Carraccis Kupferstich dürfte nach einem Karton von Federico Barocci entstanden sein, der diesem für das 1587–89 gefertigte Gemälde für Rudolf II. gedient hat. Das ehemals in Prag befindliche Werk Baroccis ist heute nicht mehr erhalten (vgl. Kat. Washington 1979/1984, S. 184 f.).
