Begonnen wurde der Palazzo Lancellotti von Francesco da Volterra, Carlo Maderna vollendete ihn wohl nach 1594. Als initialer Auftraggeber gilt Kardinal Scipione Lancellotti (1527–1598). Nach dessen Tod übernahm Kardinal Oratio Lancellotti diese Rolle. Er dürfte auch Domenichino den Auftrag für das Portal erteilt haben (vgl. Hibbard 2001, S. 142).
