Die Zeichnung stellt die antike Büste aus einem erhöhten Blickwinkel dar, so dass stärkere Licht- und Schatteneffekte sowie die Plastizität des Porträts betont werden. Entstanden ist die Zeichnung wahrscheinlich während Sandrarts Romaufenthalt in den Jahren 1629 bis 1635; vgl. L. Buccino, in: Kat. Rom 2001(a) [Fusconi, Giulia (Hrsg.): I Giustiniani e l’Antico, Katalog der Ausstellung Rom (Palazzo Fontana di Trevi) 2001–02, Rom 2001], S. 305. Sandrart zeichnete die Büste ein weiteres mal, jedoch in einem kleineren Format. Jene Ausführung, die sich im Codex iconographicus 366 [Bayerische Staatsbibliothek München: BSB-CodIcon Online, Codex iconographicus 366, DFG-Projekt der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek in Kooperation mit dem Münchner DigitalisierungsZentrum] findet, diente als Vorzeichnung für das Porträt des Demon von Athen auf der Tafel D der Teutschen Academie 1675; vgl.
